One of the reasons that I found myself working in recovery is because alcohol and substance use disorders affect all of us. Even if you aren’t actively dealing with a substance use disorder yourself, chances are you know someone who is — in your family, your community or your close friends circle. I really felt a calling to help and to really help people recover in recovery. We actually get to see people recover here.
One of my favorite things about working here is the feeling of family; the connection I have with my team and peers. The level of compassion that we share makes [the hard work] worth it. We genuinely want to see people get well. We’re not just collecting paychecks and going home. There’s a level of commitment to the recovery process that really makes this place special.

In developing professionally as a clinician, I feel like I’ve learned from our medical team and psychiatric team. I’ve learned so much about that side of addiction and recovery. They’ve really broadened my scope as to how to be a professional and treat folks from a different angle than what I personally experienced or originally came through the doors with. We’ve got an incredible team with an incredible level of sincerity and authenticity.

I started with Pyramid Healthcare as a behavioral health technician. Since then, the company has supported me as I went on to pursue my certification in peer specialist for addictive disease. The course was very competitive and they gave me the days off I needed to pursue my studies. As soon as I got that certification, a recovery coach position opened up and I was able to just slide right into it. Also, I have two kids and another part time job. Pyramid have been so accommodating. They were able to work with my schedule so I could continue to do the things that were important to me, like take care of my family, maintain my own recovery, and fulfill my obligations at my other job. I’m extremely grateful for all the support they’ve given me over the years.
If I was telling somebody to apply, I’d say get ready to work. Some days you carry a lot of weight on you, and some days you carry a lot of grief and a lot of hurt and a lot of anxiety that other people have. But it’s probably the most rewarding thing that you would ever want to do or be a part of. If you’re coming for a paycheck and it’s just a 9 to 5 job for you, you should probably find something else to do. But if you’re compassionate and you have a true heart for helping other people and being part of something bigger than you, this is the place for you.

Several friends of mine that I’ve met in recovery have come on our staff here. There’s something about being in the helping professions when you have personal experience in a similar situation that makes it feel less like a job and more like something you get to show up to and be a part of. Not every day is easy, but anything that’s easy doesn’t hold as much value or weight as the things that we have to grind on. But I think it’s rewarding.
